Gastroscopy Preparation Instructions
Please ensure that you have made arrangements to have someone else drive you home after this procedure as you will have sedation and will not be allowed to drive yourself home.
PURPOSE OF GASTROSCOPY/ENDOSCOPY
An Endoscopy involves passing a thin flexible tube through the mouth and the back of the throat to the esophagus, stomach and upper small bowel. This allows the doctor to check for abnormalities.
HOW TO PREPARE
- Stop Medications: Stop Coumadin (Warfarin) 3 days prior to the procedure. Stop Xarelto and similar anticoagulants for 48 hrs (2 days). Aspirin and Plavix should not be stopped unless directed by your physician. Discuss all other blood thinners with your doctor. Continue all other regular medications.
- AM Procedure: Do not eat or drink anything (including water) after 12 midnight if scheduled before 12:45 PM.
- PM Procedure: If scheduled after 1:00 PM, you can have a light breakfast (example: tea and toast) before 6:30 AM.
Failure to follow these preparation instructions may result in the cancellation of your procedure.
WHAT TO EXPECT
- You will need to sign a consent form before the procedure
- Your blood pressure and pulse will be taken frequently
- Your throat will be sprayed with a local anesthetic (freezing) to make it feel numb
- You will be given medication to stop your gag reflex.
- A flexible tube with a small light at the end will pass down your throat.
- If your stomach is examined, air will be injected to allow for a better view. This may result in a feeling of gas and bloating.
- This procedure takes about 5-10 minutes. Recovery from sedation takes about an hour.
- You may continue your diet when your throat no longer feels numb and you can swallow
